The article explores the relation between the material and intangible that is brought to the fore in English writer Virginia Woolf's interaction with science. Topics discussed include the lecture on X-rays Woolf accidentally attended in 1897, the implication of Woolf's wider references to X-rays in her writings, and the role played by Woolf's engagement with science in providing her a layer of imagery and metaphor for her modernist aesthetics.
